Zambia

Zambia
Kafue, Livingstone, The Luangwa Valley, The Zambezi Valley

Most people know of Zambia’s 3 main National Parks, South Luangwa, Kafue & Lower Zambezi. These are where the bulk of the safari activity happens. Other lesser-known areas are Kazanka National Park where the bat migration happens between October and November each year, Bangweulu Swamps where David Livingstone famously got lost which is one of the best places to view the African Shoebill and then there is Livingstone, the Zambian side of the majestic Victoria Falls.

We love it because we feel that it has something to offer all safari-goers from the frequently seen leopards and African wild dogs in South Luangwa to the more wild, remote & lesser-known Kafue & North Luangwa National Parks and canoeing on the Lower Zambezi National Park. It is a fantastic and diverse safari destination.

As a large ‘butterfly’ shaped country, most people will fly around to get to the destinations which are fairly spread apart. We often recommend concentrating on 2 areas rather than trying to do everything in one trip – after all you can always come back!

Kasanka Bat Migration
4-day safari itinerary

Every year towards the end of November, thousands of fruit bats descend on the small National park called Kasanka, to feed for a few weeks on the succulent fruit of a local tree, having flown from central Africa. You will stay at Wasa Lodge, a rustic Lodge with thatched chalets as your base and head out each day to the various ‘tree hides’ in the early morning and late afternoon to watch the phenomenon of thousands of bats flying and feeding. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – having done it myself!

This short safari can easily be combined with another area of Zambia or as an add-on to Botswana and Zimbabwe, small charter flights are the best way to quickly access this remote area.

Classic Zambia
8-nights in Lower Zambezi and Kafue

A magical safari that combines authentic bush camps in the Lower Zambezi Nat Park and northern Kafue Nat Park. This trip starts and finishes in Lusaka, Zambia’s vibrant capital city.

Then take a charter plane to the north of Kafue Nat Park, for a 4-night stay at Musekese Camp, the area is rich in wildlife and the guides will take you on game drives, boat cruises and walking safaris to explore the beautiful habitat. Expect to see predators galore as well as herds of elephants (dry season) and many antelope species – including Puku antelope.

Magical South Luangwa
9-night safari itinerary

South Luangwa is a stunning park and probably Zambia’s best-known, north of Lusaka.  Take a charter flight to Mfuwe airport and a few nights at Mfuwe Lodge, where the elephants walk through the lodge and then head south by road to two small bush camps in the south of the Park. This itinerary has chosen Kuyenda and Bilmungwe, which you reach by transfer vehicle from Mfuwe. At each camp, the incredible game is viewed on foot and game drives with experienced armed guides.

Expect to see amazing wildlife, with regular lion, leopard and wild dog sightings as well as buffalo herds and giraffes. This is a stunning personal safari, the bush camps have a total of 6 tents and are small and personal and a fantastic experience.

This safari starts and finishes in Lusaka but can be combined with Victoria Falls as the perfect ending.
