Self Drive Holidays
Our African self-drive holidays have been created with the independent and adventurous traveller in mind and are far less daunting than you might imagine. While we would be the first to admit that road conditions throughout much of Africa are the stuff of infamy, our range of self-drive holidays through Namibia and South Africa are perfectly manageable. Major roads in South Africa and Namibia are tarred, well- maintained and well-signposted with plenty of friendly service stations along the way. Stick to the wide national roads or turn off onto secondary tarred roads, winding their way through scenic countryside or over magnificent mountain passes. It couldn't be easier. Fly in and collect your pre-booked vehicle, load up and go. Our self-drive holidays in Africa have been created with one eye on experience and the other on practicalities; we've included as many highlights as possible on the itineraries without making you drive for days on end to see them - there's plenty of time to relax and explore. And when it comes to the game viewing in the various parks and reserves on the itineraries, you might have to negotiate a graded gravel road to get to your lodge or safari camp but once there you'll be in the care of professional guides and their fully equipped 4x4 vehicles, so you won't miss a thing. Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa lend themselves to this kind of holiday as the roads are generally good. As long as your car is in a roadworthy state and you remember to fill up with fuel whenever you can – you won't have a problem. We at Travel Wild will help plan and book your itinerary and give advice, we have visited and driven to all the places ourselves, and know the pit-falls . Most self drives go from lodge to lodge and this is easily done. Once in the game reserves however, we strongly recommend that clients use the lodge activities instead of trying to navigate through unfamiliar territory and driving conditions, while trying to spot game at the same time.
